Just in case there aren’t enough signs pointing toward a larger 4-inch display in Apple’s next-generation iPhone (like a video of the alleged display and purported photos of the phone from spare parts), information in the iOS codebase now suggests an iOS device with a larger, but not iPad-sized display resolution, could be headed our way.
The next iPhone could have a display with a resolution of 640×1136 that can support five rows of icons instead of the current four, according to sources of 9to5 Mac. By adjusting the settings in the iOS Simulator application to the larger resolution in iOS 5.1 (the current version of iOS), the screen was stretched out. But in iOS 6, a full fifth row was added to the bottom of the homescreen — a sign that engineers in Cupertino are at least testing the idea of a longer display.
Curiously, the iOS Simulator does not display five rows of icons for any resolution other than 640×1136. For other large display resolutions, homescreen icons rearrange into an iPad-like layout instead of the smaller iPhone-style arrangement.
The current iPhone 4/4S display is 3.5-inches long with a resolution of 640×960 pixels. The larger size of the anticipated 4-inch display reported in the next iPhone is generally expected to keep the same pixel width, but be slightly longer — 1,136 pixels.
