Gadget Lab Show: Galaxy S III, Microsoft Surface and Windows Phone 8

On this week’s Gadget Lab Show, we give you a hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy S III, discuss the Microsoft Surface and Windows Phone 8, and take a look at a few unconventional gadgets you can powered using your car’s cigarette lighter.

First up, reviews editor Mike Calore and staff writer Nathan Olivarez-Giles go hands-on with the latest Android phone, Samsung’s Galaxy S III. It’s available on five U.S. carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular. For $200, you get a super-fast phone with 2GB of RAM and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. But it’s not without some software flaws — The sharing features seem half-baked, and Samsung’s voice recognition system called S Voice just doesn’t work.

Next, staff writer Alexandra Chang joins Mike to talk about the latest Microsoft news: the Microsoft Surface tablet and Windows Phone 8. Microsoft unveiled the Surface at a super secretive event in Los Angeles last week, grabbing headlines for building its own tablet hardware for the first time. The touchscreen device features a built-in kickstand and an attachable Touch Cover with a full keyboard and track pad.

Alexandra and Mike also talk about new features coming to Windows Phone 8. You can expect a lot of hardware updates, including multi-core support, NFC capabilities, and microSD card expansion. There’s also a new Start Screen coming to Windows Phone 8. What happens to people who have current Windows Phone devices? They’ll get an upgrade to Windows Phone 7.8.

To round off the show, staff writer Roberto Baldwin shows off how you could survive in your car or van with a few gadgets powered by a car’s cigarette lighter. Roberto shows us an electric slow cooker, as well as an electric blanket.
