Wired received an exclusive (albeit quick) tour of Twitter's new offices in the Mid-Market Street sub-neighborhood of San Francisco on Wednesday. The cavernous space was formerly a wholesale furniture mart. It stood vacant for about five years until mid-June when Twitter moved in – and now it's a buzzing hive where Twitter codes the future.
The city hopes the presence of Twitter and other forward-thinking companies will breathe life back into a blighted and barren section of San Francisco's main thoroughfare. More businesses are moving into the lower floors. (Twitter will have three floors of its own.) And several other businesses are locating to the area, thanks largely to a series of tax breaks.
Wired was visiting for lunch, and we took the opportunity to snap a few photos – but we weren't allowed to photograph employees, visitors, or any human beings at all. Given that Twitter is a bustling environment, that, well, limited things. Still, if you want a quick peek at the new "twoffice," here it is.
Above we see comfortable foam seats meant for informal meetings and gatherings. At one point, there were several people sprawled out with laptops on them – until they had to be shooed away for this photograph. In the background, you can see two concrete green deer. They were found and painted by Ev Williams' wife, Sara Morishige Williams, and once decorated the lobby of Twitter's previous office.
