How The iPad Keeps You Connected with Wi-Fi or 3G

Apple have done a great job of marketing their iPad device. Their strategies have gone a long way in convincing consumers that the device is the best on the market when it comes to browsing the Web or watching online streaming videos. The same can be said of connecting with friends via any social networking services according to the manufacturers.

These claims are backed up with some very sophisticated apps, features and services. The overall opinion of many industry pundits is that the device is a worthy competitor to netbooks. They believe that Steve Jobs and his team did a great job in developing the iPad even though there was a lot of scepticism when it was first launched onto the market.

The device is very fast and easy to use. It has built-in, high-speed 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi which makes downloading files and streaming videos a cinch. Even when there is heavy gateway traffic or too many subscribers using the network, the device copes well making the experience a pleasant one. This is all thanks to the beefed-up Safari app and the latest Wi-Fi standard the device uses.

Apple claims that Safari is the fastest browser around which makes browsing the Internet a simple task that happens at lightening speed. One of the great features the iPad offers users is it’s capability to work on Wi-Fi as well as 3G. This means users will always be able to get on the Internet wherever they happen to be and don’t have to rely on ‘hot spots’ to stay connected.

Most Internet providers these days have 3G service and this means that iPad users can seamlessly swap over from Wi-Fi to 3G in an instant when they need to without having to contact another provider in order to do so.

Whenever an iPad user comes to the end of their surfing minutes, there’s an interactive push notification that pops up to let them know they need to either upgrade to the next data plan or switch to the latest Wi-Fi standard in their vicinity. Of course it goes without saying that the device has it’s own app to monitor and manage data usage.

How to create, view, update, and cancel calendar events using Siri

How-to-create-edit-cancel-and-view-calendar-events-with-siri

Since Siri is meant to be your personal assistant, it only makes sense to have it schedule and manage your meetings and events. Asking Siri to create a Calendar event only takes a few seconds and is much faster than creating them manually and entering all the data yourself. Whether you need Siri to schedule a meeting, tell you what's on the agenda for the, or move an existing meeting to another time to make room for a conference call or a power nap, Siri will help make sure your schedule is set.

How to create a calendar event with Siri

If you're on the go or just want an easier way to add events to your Calendar app, Siri will happily get the job done for you. Creating an event is super simple and only takes a few seconds.

  1. Hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. How to activate siri
  3. Tell Siri what you'd like her to schedule. For example: "Schedule a conference call with Phil tomorrow at 9AM."
  4. Wait for Siri to show you the Calendar widget and ask for confirmation.
  5. Schedule meeting with Siri

If there's any ambiguity about what you said, or Siri is uncertain, it will ask you to clarify. For example, if you ask to set up an appointment "tomorrow", and it's near midnight, Siri will ask you to specify the date to make sure the appointment is set up properly.

How to update a calendar event with Siri

There may be times where you'll need to make changes to existing meetings, events, or appointments. Siri can do that for you too.

  1. Hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. How to activate siri
  3. If you know what meeting you need to change you can just tell Siri to move or cancel it. For example: "Move my meeting with Rene to 5PM."

You can also use Siri to completely cancel a meeting or appointment.

Google I/O 2012's second keynote is tomorrow, get your liveblog right here!

It's hard to imagine Google managing to one-up its first keynote -- skydiving into the roof of Moscone from a blimp is pretty tough act to follow -- but that doesn't mean the company is out of surprises. The second keynote of the 2012 Google I/O developer conference is tomorrow morning and we're expecting a few updates on Chrome and then, well, even more updates on Chrome.

We'll be liveblogging the proceedings tomorrow at this page right here. Set your bookmarks now and get ready to rock tomorrow at 10:00 am PT. To figure out what time that is locally, just look right here:

Infinity Blade was more profitable for Epic Games than Gears of War

Infinity Blade was more profitable for Epic Games than Gears of War

In a recent interview Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney talked a lot about the freemium model, convergence, and in particular how successful they've been in mobile.

We've been very happy with the game industry's growth. For a while we were worried that the divide between the console growth in the west and the growth of PCs would increase. The most profitable game we've ever made, in terms of man years invested versus revenue, is actually Infinity Blade. It's more profitable than Gears of War. ... We expect DirectX technology to be widely available on these mobile devices in the next few years. ... These platforms are rapidly converging, with a set of common capabilities. The lowest end device [the iPad 2] is still a DirectX 9 device!
If you're not familiar, Gears of War is a massively popular shooting game franchise on console which originally launched in 2006 and spawned multiple sequels. The latest title sold 3 million copies in its opening week, beating out the previous two games. As of September 2011, the whole series has grossed over $1 billion.

iOS has been eating the lunch of traditional portable gaming consoles for some time now, but the new iPad has started steering towards competing with consoles, primarily by way of comparison of the Retina display's resolution with standard HD TVs. Even though the processing power and storage space of the iPad and iPhone currently limits what can be done in iOS games, those are limits that even AAA developers like Epic are willing to work around if they can enjoy higher profits than their console titles. Of course Infinity Blade is the exception rather than the rule, but it proves mobile can be at least as profitable for game developers as other platforms.

Sweeney's interview revolved a lot around the Unreal Engine which they created and has a prominent position in the mobile sphere, and provides a clear transition path for developers moving from PC and consoles. Sweeney was largely supportive of the freemium model,  and expects that all games will at some point in the future be distributed globally and digitally.

If Epic can make more money on Infinity Blade than Gears of War, is this a signal that other big-name developers should switch gears to mobile? If so, does iPhone and iPad stand any chance  of becoming a more popular gaming platform than PCs or consoles, regardless of technical limitations?
