Velocity Micro unveils three new NoteMagix Ultrabooks for $800 and up

Velocity Micro unveils three new NoteMagix Ultrabooks for $800 and up

Velocity Micro is refreshing its NoteMagix line of laptops with three 14-inch Ultrabooks: the U430, U450 and U470. These models aren't the thinnest machines in their category -- the aluminum design tips in at four pounds -- but all three have enough room for a DVD drive. All three models also feature a 14-inch display with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 -- and, notably, none of them come with bloatware. Other specs include a 1.3-MP webcam, integrated Intel HD 4000 Graphics and a rated battery life of six hours.

The $800 NoteMagix U430 is the entry-level model, with a Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive spinning at 5,400 RPM. The $900 U450 steps up to a Core i5 processor and a 120GB SSD, while the $1,100 U470 runs a Core i7 chip with 240GB of solid-state storage. The Ultrabooks are available now through Velocity Micro's site -- check out the source link for a closer look.

Falcon updated with YouTube API integration

Falcon Pro for Android

One of our favorite Twitter clients for Android, Falcon, updated just in time for 2013 with a bunch of new features. The biggie is that Falcon now uses the fancy YouTube APIs for Android that Google introduced before Christmas, but there are also a few subtle tweaks that have been added, including a spam reporting button, a slider for setting refresh rates, and a logout button. Here's the full changelog for Falcon Pro 1.4.

China Tightens Its Grip on Internet Users

The Chinese government issued a set of new Internet rules on Friday. Internet users must now provide their real names to service providers, and ISPs are required to delete forbidden posts and report such activities to authorities. In other words, the so-called "Great Firewall of China" has been further fortified. "This is just another indication that they really want to control what information gets to their citizens," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group. "It means that all communication going in and out of China are going to be more closely monitored."

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV
Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Tips And Tricks For Your iPad

Apple have designed the iPad to be easy to use, in fact even a two year old can use this device without any problems whatsoever. This makes it a very attractive option for people who are used to using an iPhone or for those who are not. However, there are still a few things about the device that do need a little bit of explaining.

Soft Reset Explained:

Although the iPad is pretty robust in so far as there are not actual moving parts in it, there are still a few things that can go wrong. With this in mind Apple have incorporated a ‘soft reset’ function into the device. This is particularly useful if the system ever freezes. By just holding the top or the power button at the same time as the Home button for a few seconds, allows users to reset the device.

Cut and Copy Pasting Explained:

Copying long texts on an iPad is a long and tiresome process. With this in mind Apple created an easy solution to the problem. Users can copy a whole paragraph without having to stretch the blue knobs on their screens. All they need to do is tap any of the text four times and this automatically highlights the whole paragraph. However, this only works on text that can be edited.

Importing Free eBooks Explained:

Users can benefit from free e-books on their iPads and this includes books that are no longer copyrighted.

Easy Mute Explained:

This is an easy to use function on an iPad that allows you to automatically turn off the volume on your device. Just by pressing the volume down button for a couple of seconds, users can turn off the volume on their devices.

Supersized Screenshots Explained:

Users can increase the size of a screenshot by simply holding the power and home buttons down simultaneously for half a second.

Bringing the Virtual Keyboard Back

Many people thought this would be difficult to achieve on their iPads but in fact it is easily done. All users have to do is touch the eject key on the real physical keyboard to get the virtual one back up.

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Poetic Slimline case for Asus Google Nexus 7 review

My search for a Nexus 7 case continues.  I’ve been down the cheap path, and then looked at the premium option, but what lies in that middle ground ? Poetic is a company makes cases for heaps of devices, and they were good enough to send me a Slimline case , one of about 10 different cases that they make for the Nexus 7. How does it stack up ? Read on.

Outside

The Slimline consists of a hard back and a flexible cover.  Both back and front are covered in a faux PU leather.  Funnily enough when I first got it, a colleague and I had a quick sniff and  the case actually smelt like leather. I had to contact Poetic to verify what the case was actually made of.  The case is available in 8 different colours so you can mix and match :)

Inside

The inside is covered in a micro-suede lining to protect both the front and back of your Nexus 7, and there’s a big open slot to allow for  speaker output.  On the right-hand side, you can see the 3 magnets that keep the case closed. The unit also has a hidden magnet in the cover lining that activates the smart on/off functionality.

Locked in

The tablet slots in and is held firmly in place  via “rails” on the right hand side and on the top and bottom corners on the left hand side.  There’s no chance of the tablet accidently falling out of the case once it’s locked in. If you do want to remove your tablet, it’s quite easy to do as well.

Cutouts

You can see that the silver bezel is not completely covered; that’s not a bad thing, just an observation.  Cutouts are available on the bottom for the micro-USB and the headphone jack. The cutout for the USB doesn’t look like it’s that big, but I haven’t found a cable that doesn’t plug in yet.

The power and volume rocker switches are slightly recessed, but easy to access.  One thing to note is that there’s a cutout for the top microphone but not the side microphone.  I don’t use the microphone function much, so I can’t tell you if not having the cutout for the side microphone actually makes too much difference.

In the hand

With the cover held back, there’s no issue using this case one-handed in either portrait or landscape mode.

Stand

The cover changes into a stand and gives you two positions for viewing or using.  Once folded properly, the stand is quite stable, and even typing in the more upright mode doesn’t cause an issue.  When you first get the case, the front cover is a bit rigid; however, it loosens up as you use it. One thing to note in the flatter mode is that the on/off and volume rockers are on the bottom right and corner, and you have to lift the tablet up at the front to access them.   When using as a stand, the inner micro-suede is exposed to the surface you’re using the tablet on.  If used on a messy or gritty surface, this may result in the screen cover getting dirty or picking up potential screen-damaging grit. Something to watch out for.

Conclusion

The Faux leather looks nice, and the case is good, sturdy, and protective.  That being said, the cutouts and ports aren’t covered in any way when the case is closed, so the tablet is vulnerable to foreign matter insurgence when you’re carrying it around or it’s thrown in your gadget bag. I haven’t had the chance to test out it’s dropability rating yet (touch wood), but I suspect it would protect the Nexus fairly well. If however you’re like me and require protection more when it’s thrown into your gadget bag with all your other “toys”, this is a good option. I really like the Poetic case, and it’s become my everyday case.

If I look at the three cases I’ve tried so far, there are good and bad points to all three. My ideal case would be handmade leather like the Noreve, have the 5 fold cover like the eBay case (which made a slightly sturdier and more stable stand and protected the on/off/volume switches when closed ), and have the sturdiness of the Poetic Slimline.   Any manufacturers out there listening ? :)

It's a common trope in cartoons, but in the real world, you just can't get a bottle to hold sound. And what kid hasn't tried? No verbal messages in a bottle for us, thanks to the laws of physics. Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Another new wave of Nexus 4s shipping

Nexus 4

Nary a moment too soon, word in our Nexus 4 forums is that another batch of the hard-to-buy (and harder-to-ship, apparently) smartphone is on its way to the good boys and girls. The phone's still sold out on Google Play, both in the 8- and 16-gigabyte versions, as are the rubber bumpers. (Interesting, though, is that it's saying we've reached our limit for bumper purchases, not that they're sold out. Apparently we're consider bumper horders or something.)

Anyhoo. Be on the lookout for a shipping e-mail if you haven't gotten on already.
